A unique opportunity to participate in a discussion of the art of translating children’s literature with a master in the field, Sarah Ardizzone.

Since 1997, Sarah has published over forty translations. She has also developed a special interest in translating urban slang, having spent time (on a grant from the French Book Office) living in Marseille to pick up ‘Beur’ verlan.

Sarah has won a string of awards for translations of children’s literature. Her recent translations include School Blues by Daniel Pennac (of which Michael Morpurgo says: “Every education minister, every teacher, every parent should read this”), published by MacLehose Press and on which she collaborated with Quentin Blake. Her translation of Joann Sfar’s graphic novel version of The Little Prince was chosen as one of the New York Times’ Notable Books of 2010.

She is currently working on the Vango series by Timothée de Fombelle for Walker Books. Her translation of Black Bazaar by Congolese author Alain Mabanckou, about the dandies of Brazzaville, will be published by Serpent’s Tail this July. Sarah has also struck up a very creative working relationship with picture book publishers Phoenix Yard Books, for whom she has translated Marjolaine Leray’s Little Red Hood and Mr Leon’s Paris by Barroux.

This webinar will be in the form of an informal discussion between Sarah Ardizzone and an interviewer. Attendees will be invited to submit their questions in advance for a considered response, or live, on the day, time permitting.

Cost: GBP 20

In order to further the strategy of replacing volunteer work with professional engagement,

Having ensured financial viability by operating on sound commercial principles,

… AUSIT National Council invites applications for a new, part-time position.

Lifelong learning is highly regarded within AUSIT. Members are required to demonstrate activity in continuous professional development (“CPD”).

Revalidation of NAATI accreditations that comes into effect in July 2012 will mean a whole new generation of T/I practitioners who will look to their professional association as the main source of advice, information and resources (events) for continuing professional development.

AUSIT is facing increased expectations to deliver relevant, high quality CPD events to a much greater number of practitioners than before. Traditionally we have relied on volunteer work, which cannot be taken for granted. For the professional organisation to appear professional, AUSIT needs to engage its best performers on a commercial basis. By announcing a new employment position, AUSIT continues to transition from volunteering towards paid professional delivery. For further details on the background to this step, please do not hesitate to contact Annamaria Arnall at email.

Liaise with members of AUSIT and the public, develop and maintain links with relevant institutions and organizations

Administer PD points

Other adhoc tasks as identified from time to time.

Demonstrated experience in teaching adults and/or designing courses and programmes for adults

Demonstrated experience in delivering courses/contents both face-to-face and online.

Desirable

Knowledge of the roles of AUSIT and NAATI in the industry

Experience in working for/with not-for-profit organizations

International experience / knowledge of overseas translation and interpreting markets and professional development

Basic modern computing skills/understanding of databases/websites.

Other Requirements

Adhere and contribute to AUSIT and workplace policies

Be of good standing in the wider translation and interpreting community

Professional Development Opportunities – Law Week 2012
I would like to draw your attention to the Professional Development
opportunities that are available during the forthcoming Victorian Law Week.
There are many sessions which could be of interest: sitting in on a mock
trial or a behind-the-scenes visit to your local magistrates’ court allows
you to familiarise yourself with legal settings and might give you that
extra confidence that you need to take the step into legal interpreting.
Sessions are available in both metropolitan and regional districts so take
the opportunity to either refresh or update your skills in this important
field.

Law Week events in general are open to the public but sometimes bookings are
required. Just visit the link below and sign up for any of the Law Week
events of your liking. You will be able to claim CPD points by entering the
details in your logbook. Box 5:1 will apply and 10 points per event.

http://www.victorialawfoundation.org.au/news-a-events/law-week/calendar
